Maintenance of the flute

Cleaning utensils flute You always have to clean your flute after you have played. You have to clean the inside to remove the water from your flute. The best way for removing water is to use a large cotton handkerchief. While you are cleaning do pay attention that you don't move the cork in the headjoint with your cleaning stick. If you move this cork the flute will not sound as good and blowing will be harder. Water in the keys will damage the pads under the keys. If you are having problems with water in your keys, you can remove it with cigarette paper or special paper from the music store. Put the paper under the key, push the key down, wait one moment, lift the key, remove the paper and done! If you use cigarette paper pay attention that you don't put the sticky side under the key.

If you have cleaned your flute from the inside you also have to clean the outside. Wipe of the fingerprints and the prints of your lips from your headjoint with a polish cloth. You can get a good polish cloth in a music store. For the rest of the flute it is enough to carefully wipe of your fingerprints. Always polish from the axes to the outside away from the keys. Pay attention that you don't move onto the pads when you are polishing your flute.

Do NEVER polish your flute with silver polish!

Tip: wash your hands and lips before you start playing the flute. You will have to clean much less after you have played.

The rest of your flute can be cleaned and polished during maintenance by a professional repairman. If you play the flute a lot, your flute needs maintenance every year, otherwise maintenance every two years will do.
